Thailand Itineraries

10 days in Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi

Ten days in Thailand can hold three very different chapters: Bangkok’s river and temples, a few slower days in Chiang Mai, and a finish by the limestone coast of Krabi. This itinerary gives each base three nights and counts arrival, departure and domestic travel honestly. You get two full days in each place, with enough space to sit down for lunch, change a plan when it rains, and enjoy the trip between the famous sights.

The short version

The ten-day route in one minute

Spend nights 1–3 in Bangkok, fly north for nights 4–6 in Chiang Mai, then travel south for nights 7–9 in Ao Nang, Krabi. Depart from Krabi on day 10. This is an editorial route for a first visit: ten calendar days, nine nights and three hotels. Confirm the flights before committing to it.

The route works best when the final international journey starts from Krabi, directly or on a suitable connecting ticket. If your return flight starts in Bangkok, use the adjustment below. A cheap fare loses its appeal if it creates an airport change or consumes the coast’s only free afternoon.

Book the shape of the trip first

Check the Chiang Mai–Krabi journey before choosing hotels: a useful nonstop service may not match your dates, and a connection changes day 7. Compare the complete airport-to-hotel journey, baggage allowance and cancellation terms. Use the airline’s current booking information for each flight.

Decisions to settle before adding activities

These checkboxes are a temporary browser aid. They may reset and do not save to, import into, or sync with Oreviyo.

Day 1: arrive in Bangkok and keep the evening easy

Reach your accommodation, leave the bags and eat somewhere nearby. Save the address and airport transfer instructions before landing. Choose a hotel for a journey you can manage with luggage and useful transport nearby; the neighborhood name alone tells you little about the final walk.

If you arrive early and feel awake, explore a few surrounding streets or sit by the river. An evening arrival needs no extra activity. Keep prepaid dinners and timed viewpoints off this day so a delayed flight does not unravel the first evening.

Day 2: the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the river

Start with the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew, then take a proper break before nearby Wat Pho. Read the Grand Palace’s official visitor information for current admission, dress requirements and access. Choose clothing that meets those rules before leaving the hotel.

At Wat Pho, give the Reclining Buddha and the surrounding grounds time instead of rushing straight to the next temple. Across the river, Wat Arun is known for its decorated stupas; TAT describes both sites in its Bangkok temple guide. Treat Wat Arun as an optional afternoon substitution if you prefer it to a longer palace visit. Check the current crossing arrangement locally before building your afternoon around a boat.

Two substantial visits are enough. Finish with a riverside meal or return to the hotel during the hottest part of your day. Save another temple for a different trip if everyone has stopped looking up.

Day 3: a neighborhood morning and Chinatown after a break

Pick one morning: a short walk around Talat Noi, a museum you have chosen for its collection, or a park close to your hotel. Resist stitching together every district you bookmarked. Have lunch, take a break and head toward Yaowarat later for a Chinatown walk and dinner. Choose food from a menu you understand and check prices before ordering.

TAT’s Bangkok overview includes Yaowarat, museums, parks and Chatuchak Weekend Market among the city’s options. If Chatuchak is your priority and its opening pattern fits, make it the main daytime activity. Keep the evening short if shopping has already used your energy; tomorrow is another travel day.

Day 4: fly to Chiang Mai and settle into the Old City

Check your departure airport carefully, leave time for the road journey, and fly to Chiang Mai. This plan treats the whole transfer as the day’s main event. After check-in, walk a small section of the Old City, find dinner and decide where tomorrow’s first stop will be.

Our suggested base is inside or near the Old City for these two sightseeing days. Check street access, noise and room facilities before booking. A late arrival simply means dinner and sleep; there is no need to rescue the day with a distant night market.

Days 5–6: Old City walks, cooking and Doi Suthep

Day 5: choose one or two Old City temples, such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, after checking current visitor access. Connect them with a relaxed walk, leaving room for coffee and lunch. Follow posted guidance around worshippers, shoes and photography. The point is to notice the places you enter, not finish a temple count.

A cooking class can fill the afternoon if food is a main interest. Compare menus, group size, transfer arrangements and dietary accommodation directly with the school. Otherwise, keep wandering locally. An evening walking market is an option only when its operating day fits your stay.

Day 6: make Doi Suthep the main outing and arrange the return journey before setting off. TAT identifies the temple as a major Chiang Mai landmark and highlights Nimmanhaemin Road for food, art and shopping in its Chiang Mai destination guide. Our suggested pairing is a temple visit followed by lunch and an optional Nimman afternoon, depending on conditions and energy.

For a slower version, stay in town and choose a class or another small neighborhood walk. Save Doi Inthanon and Chiang Rai for extra days: either addition would replace a large part of this short stay.

Day 7: travel south and unpack in Ao Nang

Travel from Chiang Mai to Krabi on your confirmed route and continue to Ao Nang. Keep the evening for check-in, dinner and a short coastal walk if daylight and weather allow. Do not reserve a boat outing against a hopeful flight arrival.

Ao Nang is our practical base for this version: TAT identifies it as a departure point for nearby islands and the beaches around Railay in its Krabi guide. Staying here avoids another hotel change. A room set back from the busiest street may suit you better than being directly beside the evening activity.

Days 8–9: Railay, a flexible sea day and time to stop

Day 8: make Railay and, if it fits, Phra Nang your main outing. Confirm where boats leave, how the return works and whether conditions are suitable before committing. Carry only what you need and protect items that must stay dry. Let the day be a beach walk, lunch and time looking at the cliffs.

Day 9: choose one island excursion if you still want a fuller sea day. Ask the operator about the actual stops, boat type, pickup, included charges and cancellation policy. Choose for the experience you want rather than the longest list of islands. Keep days 8 and 9 interchangeable so a better forecast can decide which outing comes first.

The slower choice is a day around Ao Nang or a visit to Krabi town for a meal and a short walk. If boats are cancelled, use a land-based plan and follow local instructions. You do not need an island trip to justify staying beside the coast.

Day 10: leave room for the journey home

Work backward from the airline’s check-in guidance and your confirmed airport transfer. Have breakfast, collect your bags and leave with a margin. Avoid a boat outing on departure day; a final morning near the hotel is easier to shorten.

Adjust for the season and the people traveling

This route crosses regions with different weather patterns. TAT’s regional seasons guide, in Thai places the northern cooler season around November–February and the Andaman coast’s summer or tourism season around November–April. Our editorial starting point for this combination is November–February, followed by checks for your actual dates. Seasonal patterns are not a daily forecast.

Check current weather, local conditions and attraction access before each outing. For wet days, trade a long walk for a museum, cooking class or quiet meal. For a group that needs less walking, choose one main sight and a nearby lunch each day. If two internal travel days already feel tiring, remove a base and divide the nights between Bangkok and either Chiang Mai or Krabi.

Common questions

Is ten days enough for Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Krabi?
Yes, for a selective first visit with three bases and flights between regions. This plan gives each place three nights and two full sightseeing days. Choose two bases instead if you prefer slower mornings, have limited mobility, or want several major day trips.
How many nights are in this ten-day Thailand itinerary?
Nine nights: three in Bangkok, three in Chiang Mai and three in Ao Nang, Krabi. Day 1 is arrival and day 10 is departure. If you need a final Bangkok night, reduce Krabi to two nights and travel back on day 9.
Can I take an overnight train to Chiang Mai instead?
You can redesign the trip around a suitable service, but that changes the overnight allocation. Check the railway’s current timetable, station, berth availability and booking terms. Replace a Bangkok hotel night with the train journey and keep the arrival morning light; do not simply add it to the existing plan.
Should I stay in Ao Nang or Railay?
This plan chooses Ao Nang for three nights in one base with optional boat outings. Railay may suit a stay focused on its beaches, but check the complete arrival and departure arrangements with the accommodation. The best choice depends on your flights, luggage and willingness to organize boat transfers.
Can I add Phuket, Phi Phi or Chiang Rai?
Replace a substantial part of this route or add nights. A boat excursion and a new overnight base are different commitments. With only two full days in each region, additional hotel changes quickly remove the free time that makes this itinerary workable.
Does this guide import automatically into Oreviyo?
No. Create your own trip and add the dates, flights and activities you choose. The guide’s checkboxes are temporary browser controls, may reset, and do not save or sync to your Oreviyo trip.
