Vietnam Itineraries

10 days in Vietnam: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and Hoi An

Ten days in Vietnam can give you three very different settings without changing hotels every night. This route starts in Hanoi, pauses among Ninh Binh’s limestone scenery and finishes in Hoi An. It covers the north and part of central Vietnam, with a full day protected for the flight and ground transfers between them.

The short version

Three nights in Hanoi, two in Ninh Binh and four in Hoi An

Count arrival and departure within ten days and nine nights. Use days 1–3 for Hanoi, days 4–5 for Ninh Binh, day 6 for the journey via Hanoi’s airport to Da Nang and onward to Hoi An, and days 7–9 for Hoi An. Depart through Da Nang on day 10. If your international flight leaves from Hanoi, rearrange the final night and allow an appropriate connection buffer.

Plan the nights before filling the days

This route suits a first visit focused on city walks, landscapes and time in one historic town. It leaves southern Vietnam, a bay cruise and mountain trekking for another version of the trip. Adding them would mean replacing something, rather than squeezing another destination into the same nights.

Choose arrival and departure airports before reserving non-refundable stays. The four Hoi An nights include the evening after the long transfer; they are not four completely free sightseeing days. If you arrive very late on day 1, reduce the next morning’s ambitions.

Days 1–3: find your rhythm in Hanoi

Start with the accommodation, a meal and a short walk you can easily end. On the next day, group the Old Quarter and Hoan Kiem Lake area rather than criss-crossing the city. Vietnam Tourism’s Hanoi guide identifies the lake, Old Quarter and Temple of Literature among its principal sights.

For day 3, choose one substantial culture or history visit, such as the Temple of Literature, after checking opening and ticket information. Leave the rest of the day for a neighbourhood walk, café or a performance you have actually booked. Two fixed appointments with travel between them can be enough for a satisfying day.

Before leaving Hanoi, confirm the Ninh Binh booking and how you reach its actual address. Keep the flight later in the trip visible in your plan so it does not become a last-minute decision.

Days 4–5: give Ninh Binh more than a rushed stop

Travel on day 4, leave the bags and use the remaining time for a nearby meal or short outing. Vietnam Tourism’s Ninh Binh guide describes access from Hanoi by rail or road and boat outings at Trang An and Tam Coc. Pick a suitable service and confirm the last part of the journey to your accommodation.

Use day 5 for one boat route, subject to local conditions and operation. Trang An and Tam Coc are separate departure choices; confirm which landing point the booking uses. Leave space for waiting, the journey back and a rest before adding anything else.

A visit to the Hoa Lu area can provide a different focus from the boat outing. Keep it as a separate block instead of stacking several similar boat trips and viewpoints into one day. If the weather or local advice rules out an outing, use the flexible time rather than forcing the original checklist.

“Ninh Binh” on a reservation can refer to a wider area than the railway station surroundings. Save the full address, pickup location and provider contact. For the following morning, obtain a transfer plan that gets you to the airport with the buffer your flight needs.

Day 6: protect the whole journey to Hoi An

Plan this as three connected parts: Ninh Binh accommodation to Hanoi’s Noi Bai airport, the flight to Da Nang, and the onward transfer to the Hoi An accommodation. Vietnam Airlines lists the Hanoi–Da Nang route; choose an actual dated service and check whether it is direct. Avoid choosing a connection purely because its headline flight time looks short.

What to confirm for the long transfer day
PartDetails to save
Ninh Binh to airportExact pickup, planned road journey, delay allowance and terminal required by the booking.
FlightDate, airport codes HAN–DAD, check-in deadline, baggage allowance and change terms.
Da Nang to Hoi AnMeeting instructions, full hotel address, contact number and late-arrival plan.

The airport is not a hotel-to-hotel journey. Allow for collecting luggage, check-in, security and the final road transfer. Keep the arrival evening free of a paid activity that depends on every earlier step running to plan.

For a route without this domestic flight, investigate the complete rail or road alternative and its effect on the nights. A longer journey needs time taken from somewhere else; do not keep the same sightseeing promises and simply add an overnight transfer.

Days 7–9: explore Hoi An with room to change pace

Use the first full day for a town walk, a break and a second outing later. UNESCO describes Hoi An Ancient Town as a preserved trading port whose buildings and streets reflect several cultural influences. Let the town itself be the main plan before adding another long excursion.

Check the current visitor arrangements for the buildings you want to enter. Choose a small number of interiors or cultural stops rather than treating every street as a race between ticketed sights. An evening walk can be a separate visit, not the end of an uninterrupted all-day march.

On day 8, choose one activity that suits your interests and current conditions: a booked food or craft experience, more town exploration, or a beach outing when local advice supports it. Keep day 9 available for a weather change, a postponed booking or a slower repeat visit.

For a beach day, use the beach bag checklist. It is an optional outing, not a promise of swimming weather. Check forecasts and local notices for the central coast separately from those for Hanoi.

Match the ending and the weather to your real journey

The simplest version arrives through Hanoi and leaves through Da Nang, subject to the flights available to you. If you need to fly home from Hanoi, consider returning there on day 9 and using the ninth night for the departure city. That replaces the flexible Hoi An day and its final night; it does not add an eleventh day.

Assess connections using your airline’s requirements and whether tickets are protected together. An early international departure may need a different final-night plan. Do not leave an essential domestic connection to the last possible service.

Check weather and disruption information for each part of the route before committing. If central-coast conditions do not suit your dates, a north-only trip with fewer transfers can be a better fit. Treat a substitution as a revised itinerary with its own nights and transport, not an automatic swap of hotel names.

Common questions

Is ten days enough for Vietnam?
It can work well for a focused route. This example uses three bases in northern and central Vietnam, including arrival, departure and one full transfer day. It does not try to cover the entire country.
How many nights should I book?
For this ten-day example, book nine nights: three in Hanoi, two in the Ninh Binh area and four in Hoi An. Add nights only if your actual flight dates extend the trip.
Can I add Ho Chi Minh City or a bay cruise?
Replace part of the route and recalculate the travel days and nights. Adding another major stop while keeping every existing day makes this version substantially more rushed.
Can I return to Hanoi for my flight home?
Yes, but plan the return connection and final night deliberately. One option is to leave Hoi An on day 9 and spend that night in Hanoi, replacing the last Hoi An night. Check the buffer required for your bookings.
Does this itinerary work in every season?
Check each region separately. Boat outings, coastal plans and transfers depend on current weather and operation. You may need to move activities or choose a different regional route for your dates.
