7 days in Switzerland: Lucerne and Interlaken by train

A week in Switzerland does not have to mean changing towns every day. This route uses three nights in Lucerne and three in Interlaken, linking them by train. It combines old-town walks, a possible mountain outing and time around Lauterbrunnen, with enough flexibility to move an outdoor day when the forecast changes.

The short version

Two bases, six nights and one flexible mountain day

Arrive on day 1, stay in Lucerne for nights 1–3, travel to Interlaken on day 4 and stay there for nights 4–6. Use day 5 for the Lauterbrunnen area and day 6 for Thun or a suitable local outing, then depart on day 7. Check every dated connection and mountain operation before booking, and move the final night if your flight requires it.

Build a week around two places to unpack

This is a focused central-Switzerland and Bernese-Oberland introduction, with arrival and departure counted inside the week. It leaves Zermatt, the Lake Geneva region and a full cross-country train tour for another version. Fewer accommodation moves leave more freedom to change the order of outings.

7Travel to the departure airport or onward destination.—

Choose the arrival airport and time before reserving day 1 activities. A late arrival may justify spending that first night nearer the airport, which changes the route. Similarly, an early departure can make the sixth night more useful in the departure city than in Interlaken.

Days 1–2: settle into Lucerne before heading higher

Keep arrival day to the accommodation, a meal and a walk you can shorten. On the first full day, group the Old Town and Chapel Bridge, then leave a separate block for the lakefront. Switzerland Tourism’s Lucerne guide describes the bridge, riverfront and historic centre and lists the Swiss Museum of Transport among the city’s highlights.

Choose one main visit rather than trying to include the museum, a long boat trip and a mountain journey on the same day. Check current opening and access details for any booked interior. If a boat outing interests you, look up the dated schedule and the return journey before treating it as part of the afternoon.

Use the evening to review the next day’s forecast and operation information. Keep clothing and footwear ready for the conditions you expect, and decide which city plan you will use if the mountain option no longer makes sense.

Day 3: choose the mountain plan after checking conditions

Rigi is one possible excursion from the Lucerne part of the trip. Use the Rigi operator’s planning information to check the route, operating notices, maintenance, webcams and return connections. A route that appears on a map is not a promise that every railway, boat or path will be operating on your date.

Choose one complete outing, including the journey back. If visibility, weather or operation does not suit it, use a city alternative such as a confirmed museum visit and a shorter walk. Moving an outing or dropping it can be better than paying for a fixed plan that no longer fits the conditions.

Pack for the full time outside and follow local guidance on open routes. This itinerary does not prescribe a mountain hike or assume summer walking conditions. Specialist activities need their own equipment, preparation and current advice.

If a mountain day is the main reason for the trip, consider giving the relevant base another night by removing another destination. One available day cannot guarantee the weather you hoped to see.

Day 4: let the train journey be part of the day

The Luzern–Interlaken Express connects Lucerne with Interlaken Ost. Zentralbahn’s operator page describes the scenic route and points travelers to the current timetable. Keep enough of day 4 free to check out, manage luggage, travel and reach the new accommodation.

Choose your dated connection in the SBB timetable. Check the actual service, any changes, ticket conditions and whether you want or need a seat reservation for your booking. Keep the travel ticket and reservation details clear rather than assuming one automatically supplies the other.

After arrival, leave the bags and keep the rest of the day simple. Avoid placing a mountain booking immediately after the train. An easy evening also leaves you ready for a more substantial outing the next morning.

Days 5–6: choose a valley day and a different kind of outing

Use day 5 for the Lauterbrunnen area, with the dated journey checked from your Interlaken accommodation. Switzerland Tourism’s Lauterbrunnen guide highlights the village, valley and Staubbach Falls. Start with a village visit and choose any further route according to current conditions, access and the group’s abilities.

You do not need to combine every mountain railway and waterfall visit into one day. Some attractions and paths have seasonal access, and each added ascent needs its own travel and return time. Keep an appropriate town or indoor alternative available when an outdoor plan is unsuitable.

Day 6 can provide a change of scene in Thun, whose old town and castle are highlighted by the national tourism office. Choose one principal visit and time around town, checking the current opening and transport arrangements. A lake journey is another possibility only when its dated operation fits the day.

Alternatively, use day 6 for the local outdoor outing you moved because of weather. Avoid making both days depend on clear mountain views. Before the last evening, confirm the departure-day connection and put any clothes or chargers still in use on a short final list.

Compare the actual journeys and protect the departure

Make a list of the journeys you expect to take before comparing individual tickets and passes. Include local transfers, optional boats and mountain transport, and check each product’s current coverage and restrictions with the relevant operator. A pass name alone does not tell you the final cost of every outing.

Keep optional excursions separate from journeys you must make. Compare prices and conditions for your travelers and dates, including any extra reservation costs. This guide does not assume that one pass is the cheapest option for every family or group.

For day 7, check the complete journey to the actual airport or onward station, with the buffer required for your booking. If an early flight makes that impractical, spend night 6 in the departure city. The revised split can be three Lucerne nights, two Interlaken nights and one departure-city night, still six nights in total.

Common questions

Is seven days enough for Switzerland?
It is enough for a focused first trip. This version uses two bases over six nights, with one main move. It does not attempt to include every Swiss region or every panoramic train.
How should I split six nights?
The starting split is three nights in Lucerne and three in Interlaken. If the departure requires it, move the last night to the departure city and keep the total at six.
Do I need a car for this route?
The itinerary is designed around trains and local transport. Check the exact accommodation approach, access needs and any optional activity before deciding how to make each final connection.
Should I buy a Swiss Travel Pass?
Compare the current pass price, coverage and conditions with your actual journeys and traveler details. Include mountain outings, boats and any separate reservation costs. The best fit depends on the plan you select.
Can I use this itinerary in winter?
Keep the two-base organization, but check every dated service, attraction and outdoor route. Do not assume summer paths, boats or mountain access are available; choose suitable activities and keep weather alternatives.
